Tropical Storm Karl closes on Mexican coastline

Hurricane Karl will steam on to the Mexican coast from the Gulf of Mexico Friday. Mexico's government issued a tropical storm warning for the peninsula from Chetumal northward to Cabo Catoche. Karl has grown into a major, Category 3 hurricane.

The Mexican government issued a hurricane warning for a 186-mile stretch of coast in Veracruz state. The storm was about 70 miles (110 km) east-northeast of Veracruz, Mexico, moving west at around 9 mph (15 kph).

Hurricane center said: “the storm is expected to quickly weaken once it enters the Mexican mountains.” The storm is at present likely to produce rainfall accumulations of 5 to 10 inches along the central and southern Mexican Gulf Coast region.
