Microsoft executive Stephen Elop is new CEO for Nokia

Nokia confirmed a new CEO by replacing its long-serving chief Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo with Microsoft executive Stephen Elop. Stephen Elop will assume the new position as of September 21.

Stephen Elop is ending Kallasvuo's 30-year career at Nokia. Kallasvuo's inability to lead the company in the last few years was hinted at in a statement by the board. Nokia shares were up 5 percent to 8.13 euros at 0810 GMT. Fund manager Inge Heydorn said “It is good that something is happening.”

Nokia has struggled to keep ip with rivals like Apple and Google in smartphone market under Kallasvuo. Stephen Elop is currently the head of Microsoft's Business Division.
